The radiation oncology team at the PinnacleHealth Cancer Institute is at the forefront of new radiation technologies that significantly reduce patient side effects from radiation treatment.
What Is Radiation Oncology?
Radiation oncology therapy kills cancer cells by using high-energy radiation (X-rays, gamma rays and charged particles) to damage their DNA. About 50 percent of all cancer patients are treated with some type of radiation during their cancer treatment.
Used before or during other procedures, radiation shrinks tumors to make surgery or chemotherapy more effective. Used after surgery or chemo, it destroys any remaining cancer cells. For some patients, radiation will be their only form of treatment.
Our radiation oncologists are an integral part of your care team, working closely with your other healthcare providers to develop the most effective treatment plan. We offer treatment for all types of cancers, including:
Comfort and Convenience
Your individualized treatment plan is designed with your safety and comfort in mind. From your first planning visit through the course of your treatment, our attentive staff will make sure you understand and are prepared for your treatment plan.
Having your treatments close to home can make a significant difference. Because radiation treatments may occur five days a week for several weeks, we offer treatment at two convenient locations: PinnacleHealth Cancer Center at the Community Hospital in Harrisburg
and the Ortenzio Cancer Center at Pinnaclehealth on the West Shore
The Latest Technology
Our highly skilled radiation oncology team – which includes radiation oncologists, radiation physicists, dosimetrists, nurses and radiation therapists – carefully plans your radiation oncology treatments. We use the latest technology, including:
CyberKnife® – A breakthrough, pain-free alternative to surgery, the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System is used to precisely deliver high doses of radiation to your tumor with pinpoint accuracy to protect healthy tissue.
Brachytherapy – With this internal form of radiation therapy, we implant a radioactive source, sometimes called a seed, close to your tumor to allow delivery of large doses of radiation with minimal discomfort and fewer office visits.
Varian Trilogy with RapidArc – Used for image-guided radiation therapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy, this technology delivers precisely sculpted radiation doses that spare surrounding organs and tissue, decreasing side effects.
Your Nurse Navigator
Our nurse navigators are there for you and your family. From your first appointment throughout your treatment and follow-up, this specially trained nurse provides reassurance, answers questions, coordinates appointments, and helps you access support services within PinnacleHealth and in the community.
