Cancer Care

Survivorship is a distinct phase of cancer care.  As a survivor, you or your loved one may face physical and emotional challenges that can significantly impact quality of life. That is why PinnacleHealth offers our patients the Star Program ® (Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation),  a reimbursable cancer rehabilitation program that helps cancer survivors heal and resume normal day-to-day activities.

A Commitment to Optimal Recovery

A cancer diagnosis can be traumatic, and so can life-saving treatments. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery can impact overall health and may cause significant medical problems that interfere with daily function and well-being. Cancer survivors often have symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, insomnia, memory loss, fear, anxiety and depression. The PinnacleHealth STAR Program offers important physical and psychological rehabilitation to survivors so they can recover more quickly and more completely than they would otherwise.

Comprehensive Care Covered by Health Insurance

All of our services are reimbursable by health insurance providers. We serve all survivors in need, whether they are beginning treatment, finished with treatment, or experiencing late effects or unresolved issues from long-ago treatment. Our program is open to everyone no matter the prognosis, cancer stage or phase of recovery:
  • Newly diagnosed patients can increase their strength and endurance and prevent future medical problems.
  • Survivors living with cancer as a chronic disease can receive help managing treatment-related conditions.
  • Individuals who are cured or in remission can boost their immune systems so that they can heal as well as possible.

Specially Trained Staff

Our rehabilitation care, based on conventional medicine, is offered to patients by a knowledgeable and sensitive medical staff, specially trained to treat survivors of all forms of cancer. They are medical experts at the top of their fields and comprise a variety of disciplines:
  • Physicians
  • Physical therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Speech and swallowing therapists
  • Registered dieticians and nutritionists
  • Mental health professionals

A "Big Picture" Approach To Your Recovery

Rather than using a "problem-oriented" approach, and addressing health issues as they arise, we address the full spectrum of post-cancer care, including:
  • Diet
  • Sleep issues
  • Existing pain
  • Endurance
  • Strength
  • Exercise habits
  • Emotional outlook

Personalized Interdisciplinary Plan

After undergoing a thorough evaluation by a physician, a team of medical specialists is assigned to each patient according to his or her individual needs. This team creates a personalized rehabilitation plan and offers guidance for the duration of the program, with the goals of increasing strength and energy, alleviating pain, improving physical functioning, achieving emotional balance and boosting the immune system.

Who should be referred to cancer rehabilitation?

Anyone, who is undergoing cancer treatment, has recently completed cancer treatment, or who is living with unresolved problems from cancer treatment such as musculoskeletal pain, decreased endurance and strength, balance problems, fatigue, etc.

Where is the STAR Program based?

  • Star's West Shore location is in the out-patient Physical Therapy offices at Camp Hill. Our Lymphedema Certified Therapists that specialize in Oncology also practice out of this facility.
  • Our STAR Program Certified out-patient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy services on the East Shore are on the Community Campus in the Bloom Building.

STAR Program® Certified

We received our STAR Program Certification from Massachusetts-based Oncology Rehab Partners (ORP), whose unparalleled development, training and support products in oncology rehabilitation gives healthcare facilities the capacity to offer quality survivorship care to their patients.
